| Terri Smart trained in architecture and spent many years in the far east working as an architect and interior designer. Whilst living in Hong Kong she developed an interest in ceramics, which led to her joining day classes tutored by a local potter. After moving to Singapore she continued with her new found passion and took studio space in order to develop her own ideas. She moved back to Britain in 1994 and has worked as a studio ceramicist ever since. In her own words, Terri says "The feel of the clay and my delight in making a structured piece out of a formless lump became more and more important in my life as I became familiar with the medium. I often wake up in the middle of the night with a new idea and then I can't wait to get into the studio and work directly with the clay! I am influenced by natural elements such as wind and water and I like to emphasise the contrasts between nature and man". Most of Terri's work is hand-built in textured stoneware clays, and decorated with coloured slips, oxides and glazes before firing to 1260°C.
Terri is a member of London Potters, Surrey Sculpture Society, the Surrey Guild of Craftsmen and the Society of Designer Craftsmen.
