| Michael Richmond became a full time potter in 1976, In recent years he has concentrated on making birds, combining his hobby of birdwatching with his work, which is for him an ideal situation. Living and working in the Leicestershire countryside he has truly found his vocation. Each bird is unique, hand thrown on the wheel to start, moulded into shape, then wings, tail and head added before detailing, glazing and if standing, mounted onto a slate base.
Over the years Michael has amassed a lot of information on glazes and clays, which has been useful in giving him a palette of colours in both matt and glossy glazes. He fires in both electric and gas kilns, giving him both oxidizing and reducing atmospheres which give him a wide range of textures and colours.
