Neil Paterson's paintings come from memory fragments and a love of landscape painting in the Western tradition. Every one is unique and every one is redolent of a perfect moment captured after weeks of intense painting and repainting. When working, Neil can be a viewer at a distance as well as a participant in the experience of beauty through solitude. The small scale of the work fits into the technique of working across several canvasses at once with both knife and brush. In this way small areas can be worked on repeatedly to build up layers of oil paint. As one canvas becomes too wet, another reaches a degreee of dryness. The process focuses on attention to detail and enables broader gestures to provide a more general sense of nature.
