Printmaking: richard spare
Richard Spare spent much of his early career editioning work for artists such as David Hockney and Howard Hodgkin. Since 1990 however he has concentrated on his own creative work, primarily printmaking.

His imagery is derived from different aspects of his personal and domestic life. Richard's family, house and garden, together with his travels prove to be a constant source of inspiration for his creative processes.

Richard recently designed a garden behind his studio, an old coach house and his plants, flowers and vessels are often the starting point for much of his work. The velvety quality of his prints is achieved by using a drypoint technique. These images are all hand coloured after they have been etched.

Much of Richard's imagery is based on subjects he observes whilst on holiday, a boat in a dry dock in Cornwall or artichokes in a terracotta pot in Tuscany. Journeys to India, Nepal and the intense colours experienced there have infused his palette with deep glowing tones.

Richard has exhibited widely throughout the UK, North America and the far East and his work has proved to be very popular with a wide range of art collectors.
