| Annie Rouse was born in Plymouth. The daughter of a Bertram Mills clown, Annie first pursued a career in the Performing Arts, working for the Royal Shakespeare Company and in film and television. However, in the mid 1990's, having held a lifelong passion for the Visual Arts, she decided to pursue a second career as an artist. She gained a place at Central St Martins studying Fine Art and Painting and graduated in 1998. Since then, Annie has concentrated on the output of her paintings and drawings, working with many materials, combining acrylic and oil with plaster, reconstitued stone, emulsion, wax, and charcoal. Her main inspiration is our marine and landscape surroundings. Images and memories of coastal walks, both at home and abroad, inland waterways, rural and urban all provide visual ideas for Annie's works, as does the marks left by the passage of time, both man made and naturally occurring. Annie says of her work " I concentrate on the borderlines between abstract and reality. My subject matter derives from both conscious and unconscious impressions of my immediate environment, sometimes my home and the nearby River Thames, sometimes sea harbours and coastlines I have visited. The end result, I hope successfully capturing a feel for the subject".
