| Peter Heard is an artist whose passion for his subject clearly derives from his previous profession, that of a civil engineer and bridge designer. His work is characterised by a fascination of structure and engineering, evident since he began painting back in the 1970's. His early paintings were highly detailed, intricate and sophisicated compositions, usually depicting quintessential English villages or eccentric portraits. Although achieveing international recognition for this work, Peter now modestly refers to this time as a "25 year apprenticeship", which has enabled him to produce his current and greatest work. He is highly influenced by American Primitive art, in particular the Limner painters, self taught, travelling artists who were paid to record family portraits before the advent of photography. His other artistic influences include Edward Hopper, Andrew Wyeth and the italian surrealist Sergio Agostini, now a good friend of Peter's. In the mid 1990's Peter's work took a dramatic change of direction. It followed a visit to America's east coast. It was there he saw the giant lighthouses of North Carolina's Outer Banks which inspired him to start a collection of lighthouse studies, to Peter, objects of graphic beauty, obsolete solitary giants, viewed from impossible viewpoints, fixed on the horizon with brilliant blue skies and curiously shaped clouds and vapour trails, now collectively referred to as "his magificent obsession". |
