| Alexis Gorodine was born in 1944 in Malicorne, France. Between 1970 and 1975 he studied at the Atelier d'Urbanisme, Martinique, Studio (engaving) Louis Calevaert-Brun, Paris and the Atelier Sauve-qui-peut, Paris. From 1977 to 1982, Gorodine worked and travelled in Africa, USA and South America. Between 1982 and 1991 he lived and worked in New York. In 1992 he returned to his native France and settled in Paris where he has remained to date. The inspiration for Alexis Gorodine's paintings and etchings comes from all things organic, whether it be ancient fossils and petrified forms or living organisms. It is the beginnings of life that fascinate his imagination most, both the literal start of organic life and the emergence of the human culture and then the ultimate passing of the life force into a state of permanence as found in fossils, shells, sand and earth and the remains of culture by way of history, language and art. His art appears both ancient and contemporary because in the combination of old and new, of figuration and abstraction one always discovers fresh thought. His etching and carborundum techiniques create an image of porosity and fragility, reminiscent of a combination of cave paintings, French Decollagistes and modern urban graffiti.
He has exhibted professonally since 1995 in Paris, Bruge, Amsterdam, Strasbourg, Frankfurt, Quimper, Nancay, Chartres, Dusseldorf, Madrid, Zurich, Oslo, Harelbeke, Grenoble, Orgeval, Essen, Annency, Vendee, Tokyo and Chicago and has work in many public and private collections, to name a few: Brooklyn Museum, New York; Musee d'Art Moderne, Paris; Museo d'Arte Contemporaneo Caracas; Galeria de Arte Nationale, Caracas; Museo de Arte Moderno, Bogota; Metro North, New York; Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris. |
